The worst storm season in living memory is walking toward the valley, and the valley does what it has always done: it makes a list, puts the kettle on, and refuses to lose anybody.
Riley Chen, the new marshal, believes in systems. Alex Mercer, the carpenter at the culvert house, believes in wood, silence, and not being asked about his family. Between them stands a town that fully intends to marry them to it. And possibly to each other.
Then the frost starts writing warnings on the glass, a boy with a scavenged radio begins hearing the whole county at once, and the storms gathering over the ridge turn out to be more than weather.
